Our Story

When Friedrich and his wife Hedwig are in the kitchen, something magical happens. Music is playing, the smell of oven roasted nuts fills the air, and new chocolate fillings are invented.

It all started, when Friedrich asked his German mother to show him how to bake a simple cake…

Two years later Friedrich started making chocolates as a hobby. When he felt ready to  sell his products, he brought some of his chocolate pralines to a party and asked a friend what to call his new business.  His friend was sweetly surprised tasting the chocolates and said: “I’m in love chocolates”. Little did Friedrich know, that his future wife Hedwig happened to be standing right next to him as his friend told him this. I’m in love chocolates later became the business we know today as “Friedrich’s Finest”.

All Friedrich’s Finest products are carefully handcrafted by Friedrich and Hedwig.

They are a result of their union sharing their love through chocolates, cakes and more.

Close to Friedrich’s childhood home in Germany there was a small but great chocolatier and patisserie shop, where he used to go and taste the most delectable chocolates and cakes as a child. When Friedrich moved to Canada as an adult, he started to miss the chocolates and cakes he was used to from his home country.

One time upon going back to Germany for a visit, he asked his mother if she could show him how to bake a simple cake. Friedrich and his mother baked a cake together, and the rest is history!

Friedrich got back to Canada with two cake recipes in his pocket and started practicing making the cakes – a red wine chocolate cake and a hazelnut chocolate cake. Soon they became favourites amongst his friends.

Hedwig had always baked a lot in her home country Germany and upon moving to Canada she continued. After meeting Friedrich and baking cakes for Friedrich’s Finest, she noticed that they got a lot of requests for gluten free cakes. The gluten free cakes Hedwig had tried from grocery stores were often very sugary and lacked real flavor. She started converting her German cake recipes into gluten free recipes and found, that adding ingredients such as roasted nuts and lemon zest gave her cakes the complexity of flavour she wished for. Appreciated by her customers and enjoyed by everyone – both gluten free and non-gluten free eaters – all of Friedrich’s Finest cakes are now offered gluten free.
